How to Recover Deleted Files on your Android Phone or Tablet

If you’ve ever accidentally deleted files, photos or videos, you’re not alone. Don’t worry or panic too much though as there are ways to recover your data even if your device isn’t rooted. However, you only have a small window of opportunity, do not save anything else to your Android and don’t switch it off.

You can turn off your 3G/4G data and your WiFi so there is no chance your device will automatically start updating something. Now you need to connect your device to a PC and run some kind of file recovery app. If your files were stored on a memory card, you can use a Micro SD card Adapter to connect it to your PC via USB. Then you’ll want to download software like Recuva which recovers lost files.

  • Firstly you’ll want to select what kind of file you want to recover, documents, photos etc. Follow the prompts of the program and select where to recover the files from. Once you’ve recovered your files it’s worth saving them to your PC first and then putting them onto your device afterwards.
  • Now if your files weren’t on your SD card then don’t worry, there’s still a way to recover your data. You’ll want to enable the developer options in Android. Go to Settings, About Phone (or tablet), Build Number, and tap the build number seven times. Now you can go into Developer Options and enable USB debugging.

You should be able to use software like Wondershare Dr Fone to scan through your device.

If you have root:

  • Download Undelete For Root Users.
  • Select where to restore your data from.
  • The process will take anywhere from a couple of minutes to ten minutes depending on the size of your memory.
  • You’ll then be presented with retrievable data in different tabs such as Files, Documents, Videos etc. Anything recovered will return to wherever it was previously saved before it got deleted.

If you find that this didn’t work, try the Recuva method or research different apps or software to help.
