How to create and send GIFs on Whatsapp!

WhatsApp is a social monster. It’s the giant that doesn’t rest, it just keeps growing. It helps that WhatsApp is also owned by Facebook, one of the most successful communication options in the world. One aspect which users have been requesting, for quite a while now, is the support of GIFs. These are really short image/videos that play out repeatedly, you might have seen them being shared on Facebook or Twitter.

Up until now the only way you could send a GIF via WhatsApp was to root your device and do some magic, however that option voids your warranty and probably isn’t worth the hassle. However, WhatsApp seem to be waking up to the potential of the GIF and will soon be rolling out an updated version to provide you with this treasure.

It’s worth noting that you can register to take part in the beta version of the app and gain access to the feature already, or you could wait a little bit until it becomes an official release in the Play Store. So once you’ve got the feature added, exactly what do you do?

Well first things first, the GIF feature will only support videos that are 6 seconds long or less, meaning you’ll need to trim your videos to the desired length. Other than that it’s really simple.

1) Open a conversation thread with someone you want to send a GIF to.

2) Tap that handy little paperclip icon.

3) Tap “Camera” and then navigate to “Record Video”.

4) This is where you’ll want to record a video: Remember, you can only send a video that is 6 seconds long or less.

5) After you’ve recorded the video press OK and you’ll be offered the option to trim your video.

6) From here you’ll want to tap the camcorder icon which you’ll find in the top-right hand corner.

7) Tap “Send” and watch as your magical little video is transported through space into a GIF right before your eyes.

The same principle can be applied to videos you already have on your Android device as well, although again the maximum length is 6 seconds so they’ll need trimming down.

And there you have it. The illusive GIF feature is finally coming to a WhatsApp near you so keep your version updated and make the most of sending your friends and family funny GIFS.
