It is common knowledge that WhatsApp messenger does not only support private chats but also group chats. Group chats allow multiple contacts to chat together from one common chatroom. WhatsApp groups can easily be created and customized by anyone. You just have to create a group and add participants.
However, WhatsApp groups can be very annoying sometimes, especially when you are added to a particular group without your permission. You will receive irritating notifications each time group participants send messages and media to the group.
Although you can avoid annoying group messages by muting the notifications or by exiting the groups, there is a more preventive step that you can take. You can block people from adding you to any WhatsApp groups!
Previously, you had to block a contact to prevent them from adding you to a WhatsApp group. Now with the latest versions of the WhatsApp app, all you have to do is to access a feature within the privacy settings that will allow you to choose who can add you to groups.
To access the feature and stop people from adding you to WhatsApp groups:
- Open the WhatsApp app by tapping on its icon
- On the landing page, tap the three dots on the right side of the screen
- On the pop-up menu that appears, tap Settings
- Tap Account on the menu that appears
- On the next page, tap Privacy
- Scroll downwards on the Privacy page to locate Groups
- Tap on Groups to access the Groups settings
By default, the setting will be on “Everyone”. This means that anyone can add you to a WhatsApp group. You can select “My contacts” which means that only people in your contact list can add you to WhatsApp groups. The last option is “My contacts except…” This setting allows you to exclude a particular person or several people in your contact list from adding you to WhatsApp groups.
Group administrators who will be restricted from adding you to groups will have the option of sending you private invites instead.
