How to Move Photos on your Android Phone to a MicroSD Card

With an Android phone, you can take photos using your camera or receive images from different sources. By default, all your photos are stored within your phone’s internal memory. If your phone has a small internal storage space, it may not be enough for all the photos you take or receive.

To expand the memory capacity of your phone, you will need to use a microSD card which is supported by most Android devices. You can then change the primary storage location for your photos from the internal storage to the microSD card that will have more space.

This piece explains the steps that you can follow to move the photos on your Android phone to a microSD card.

Changing the Default Storage Location to the MicroSD from the Camera App

From your phone’s camera app, you can change the default storage location of the photos you take to the microSD. To do this:

  • Launch the camera app on your phone and navigate to Settings
  • Under the settings menu, scroll downwards to find the Storage location settings.
  • Tap on the Storage location section and select the SD card.
  • The photos you take with your phone’s camera will now be saved in your microSD card

How to Move the Photos in your Gallery to the MicroSD card

You can also move the photos already in your gallery/internal storage to the MicroSD card mounted on your phone. To do so:

  • Navigate to the internal storage menu
  • Through the list of available folders, tap on DCIM
  • Within the DCIM folder, tap and hold the Camera folder
  • On the list of options that appear, tap the Move button. This option varies in different devices.
  • Go back to the main menu in the file manager and now tap on SD card
  • On the list of folders that appear, find the DCIM folder and tap on it. If the folder is unavailable, tap the “Create folder” button and rename the new folder as DCIM
  • Tap the Done button to begin the transfer process
  • Repeat the above process on the Pictures folder on the internal storage menu.
  • All your photos will now be accessed on your microSD.
