What Is TikTok? How Does It Work and How Do You Use It?
If you’re over the age of 18 and don’t know what TikTok is, you’re not alone. This micro-vlogging platform is most definitely the realm of the under-18s.
Ok, so, TikTok – with hundreds of millions of users right now – is insanely popular with teenagers. But, what is it exactly and how does it work?
Here’s the short version: TikTok is a video production/social media app that allows you to create short videos with various effects and then share them with friends. Like Instagram, you can follow people, ‘like’ their creations, add hashtags etc.
TikTok’s holding company is a Chinese startup called Bytedance and in the first quarter of 2018 TikTok was the most downloaded iOS app.
Here’s how it works.
Get Started: Download and install the app. Duh!
The ‘For You’ tab: As soon as you open the app you’ll be in the For You tab. This is TikTok’s version of Instagram’s Discover. You’ll be presented with content based on your past ‘likes’, follows, location etc.
The ‘Following’ tab: Next to the For You tab is the Following tab. This is just as it says – the Tik Tok accounts you follow. Obviously, if you’re new to Tik Tok it will be empty because you aren’t yet following anyone. So, let’s remedy that!
The ‘Search’ icon: This is where you can search for hashtags, accounts, songs people have included in their videos etc.
When you want to follow the creator of a certain video just tap their handle. You’ll be taken to their profile where you can then give them a follow.
Create and post your own videos: Tap the plus sign at the bottom of the screen. This is will access your camera (You will need to grant the app permission to use it).
If you’ve used Instagram or SnapChat this part will be easy. You’ll use the menu to add filters, edit etc.
Add sound: Tap Add a Sound to add music to your video.
When you’ve got your video the way you want it, tap Next to add a caption, hashtags etc. Follow reactions to your clip by tapping the comment bubble.
