Control the Data That Apps and Websites Share With Facebook

If you visit a specific website or use certain apps, you will probably find a relating Ad on your Facebook account. Is this by any chance coincidence? The answer is NO! The apps and websites you visit share data with Facebook for advertising.

To help address privacy concerns, Facebook recently launched a new feature called Off-Facebook Activity that controls the data that apps and websites share with your Facebook account. The feature was first available for Facebook users in South Korea, Ireland, and Spain, but will soon be made available to other Facebook users across the globe.

With the new feature, you can view a summary of the data sent to Facebook by other apps and websites through their online business tools such as Facebook Pixel and Facebook Login. You will also be able to disconnect the shared data if you want to and disconnect future Off-Facebook activity from your account.

To use the Off-Facebook Activity feature:

  • Open your Facebook App and tap the three vertical bars on the top right side of the screen to access the menu
  • Scroll through the menu and tap Settings and Privacy
  • Under the sub-menu that appears under Settings and Privacy, tap Settings
  • Scroll downwards to Your Facebook Information
  • Tap the Off-Facebook Activity option
  • Tap Manage Your Off-Facebook Activity to manage your data sharing
  • A list of apps and websites that have shared data with your Facebook account will appear
  • To remove specific websites, tap on whichever website you do not want to share your data with Facebook
  • If you want to disconnect all your data-sharing history from your personal account, tap the “Clear History” option

To disconnect future data collection from your Facebook account:

  • Navigate to the “Manage Your Off-Facebook Activity” page
  • Tap on “More Options”
  • Tap the “Manage Future Activity” option
  •  Tap the toggle button next to the “Turn off your future activity sharing” to turn it on
