How to Clear WhatsApp Data on Android

It’s a matter of normality these days for people to have an array of different social media applications on their devices. WhatsApp is among the most popular thanks to the ability to communicate with anyone, anywhere in the world, completely for free. The downside to most social apps is that they eat up your storage space like you wouldn’t believe.

Well today we are going to take a look into how to clear your WhatsApp data from your Android device. In doing so, you’ll free up a lot of memory (especially if you’ve got hundreds of conversations flowing).

IMPORTANT: We highly recommend that you backup your account before proceeding any further. You can set your WhatsApp account to automatically backup to the cloud or you can manually do it from the “Settings” section of the app.

Deleting Chats

The first thing you need to do is open up WhatsApp. From there make sure you’re on the homepage for your chats. If you’re on contacts or calls then just tap on chats. Then from here you can tap and hold down on a particular chat which will select it (assuming you’re running the latest version of WhatsApp). Once selected, you can either continue tapping chats to select multiple ones at once or you can just focus on the one.

At the top of your screen you’ll see numerous icons, one of which looks like a bin. Tap that and you’ll be offered the chance to confirm the decision. You’ll also be able to tap a box which will delete all of the media associated with that chat. If you don’t tick the box then any files, photos, videos etc will remain on your Android.

Clearing or Deleting All Chats

The above method is perfect if you only have a couple of chats you want to delete but you might want to get rid of everything. This is easy enough to do. First of all go to “Settings” —> “Chats” —> “Chat History”. From here you will have a few options, such as archive chats or delete all. The two options we will focus on will be “Clear all chats” & “Delete all chats”.

Clear All Chats:

If you tap the clear all chats option, every conversation you participate in will be cleared of every single message. However, all of your chats will still be available to choose from on your chat list.

Delete All Chats:

If you go with the delete all option, then every single chat will be deleted along with any media inside and every conversation will be removed from your chat list. The only exception to this rule is any group chats you might be part of. Any groups will still be deleted but they will still be available in your chat lists.

And that’s all there is to it. Clearing your WhatsApp data is incredibly easy and can be done within minutes and a couple of taps.
