Flying was once incredibly expensive to do. Nowadays however there is more and more competition from budget airlines and different competitors all trying to grab a potential customer.

That said, there are some things you can do in order to try and save a bit more money and travel cheap – and they all comprise of that good ol’ machine called Google. Google Flights to be more specific, the search tool that allows you to search for flights at ease.

Check out a few tips below and see how you can save some money on your next getaway.

1) Find the cheapest day of the month.

You might have a destination in mind but aren’t too fixed on a date yet. That’s easy. Google Flights will let you know the price for your flights for each day of the month, so you can easily make an educated decision based on your budget.

2) Get price alerts in advance.

It always seems to be the case that when you look for a flight, the price just shot up a day before (conveniently). A nifty trick with Google Flights is to allow notifications. That way you’ll get notifications beforehand when all of their magical algorithms and research can determine when prices will spike. You might get told a few days in advance or you might see something flash on your screen that flights might go up by $x in the next 5 hours.

3) Figure out how much you could save.

At the top of each search you’ll see a “tip” bar. This tip will let you know exactly how much money you could save to get to the same destination but via a different route or time. So if you don’t mind flying early, or late, or if you can use an alternative airport, then you can find yourself saving a lot of money with this. Especially if it’s $187 cheaper to fly eight hours later…

4) Search for a region.

If you haven’t decided on a particular place to go to, but you know you definitely want to escape, then consider searching for a region instead (such as Europe or Asia). Google Flights will then tell you the cost of flights to major cities and locations all throughout that region and you can make a decision based on the price.

5) Monitor prices.

Once you’ve settled on a potential flight, you can ask Google Flights to monitor it. This will have the giant monster constantly checking and keeping an eye on it, and if the price begins to fall you’ll get a notification. The same will apply if it rises much too, so either way you can always be prepared to make a decision.
